When Hospitality Becomes Culture: The History of the Porto Arts Club

There are projects born to answer a market need. Others are born to fulfil a vision. Meet Porto Arts Club.

The history of Porto Arts Club

Some projects are created to meet a market need. Others are created to realize a vision.

The Porto Arts Club clearly belongs to the second category.

In an industry where differentiation is often sought through design, location, or the services offered, this project is based on a much more ambitious premise: to create a space where hospitality, art, architecture, gastronomy, and community coexist organically.

It’s not just a place to stay.

It’s a place to belong.

And perhaps it is precisely this vision that explains why, just a few months after its opening, the Porto Arts Club began to attract the interest of some of the most respected international publications dedicated to design, architecture, and lifestyle.

Much more than a boutique hotel

Reducing the Porto Arts Club to the category of “boutique hotel” would be to oversimplify what the project represents.

Located in Foz do Douro, one of Porto’s most iconic neighborhoods, the building was conceived as a true cultural ecosystem. A private members’ club where residents, travelers, artists, creatives, and entrepreneurs come together through an ongoing program of exhibitions, talks, music, gastronomy, and cultural experiences.

The lodging aspect exists, but it isn’t the center of the narrative.

It is merely one way to experience the project.

The architecture, designed by the Masslab studio, preserves the memory of the original building while creating new pathways, new relationships between spaces, and a deeply contemporary atmosphere. Every detail has been thought out to stimulate curiosity, connection, and contemplation, in a design language that prioritizes Portuguese materials, natural light, and a strong connection to the Atlantic.

When the International Design World Turns Its Attention to Porto

The first major recognition came in July 2025, when the prestigious magazin The World of Interiors published an extensive feature dedicated to the Porto Arts Club.

More than simply introducing a new space in Porto, the article frames the project as a new cultural hub in the city, highlighting its hybrid identity as a private club, temporary residence, and platform for contemporary art.

The feature describes a space where “people from different backgrounds come together,” highlighting the cultural programming, the relationship with the artistic community, the architecture, the careful selection of materials, and the way each decision seeks to create an experience rather than simply offer a service.

A project that continues to garner recognition

The editorial interest did not end there.

In March 2026 Attitude Interior Designone of the leading international architecture and interior design magazines published in Portugal also dedicated an article to the Porto Arts Club.

The feature highlights how the building was renovated while respecting its historical legacy, simultaneously creating new spaces for gathering, creativity, and sharing. The article also emphasizes the diversity of the spaces - from apartments to galleries, lounges, an amphitheater, and areas dedicated to cultural events - reinforcing that the project was designed to foster experiences, not just stays.

A few months later, further international coverage followed in the French magazine Savoir-Vivre and the publication Planète Art – Tribune des Artsboth focused on the relationship between heritage, contemporary art, and new cultural destinations.

Estas publicações vieram consolidar o posicionamento do Porto Arts Club como um projeto que ultrapassa o universo da hotelaria para entrar na conversa internacional sobre arquitetura, design e cultura.

The common thread among the articles

There is one particularly interesting aspect that emerges when we analyze all these reports.

None of them focuses on the commercial aspect of the project.

None mention the number of rooms, occupancy rates, or amenities.

They all choose to tell exactly the same story: the vision.

They speak of the restoration of a historic building.

Of the collaboration between architecture, design, and art.

The importance of Portuguese artisans.

The creation of a space designed for the community.

The cultural programming.

The cuisine.

The music.

The identity.

Ultimately, they recognize what truly sets Porto Arts Club apart: the ability to create meaning.

Feel Discovery’s Vision

At Feel Discovery, we believe that the most significant projects aren’t necessarily the largest or the most luxurious.

They are the ones that manage to build their own identity.

As partners in the management and positioning of hospitality assets, we seek to work with projects that add value to the destination, that make an impact on the community, and that offer authentic experiences to those who visit them.

The Porto Arts Club embodies exactly this vision.

It is a project that demonstrates how hospitality can serve as a platform for culture, creativity, and bringing people together.

And when some of the most respected international publications choose to tell this story, we realize that this uniqueness is not only appreciated by those who experience it firsthand.

It is recognized beyond borders.

Because, in the end, some projects simply attract attention.

Others become benchmarks.

The Porto Arts Club is clearly on that path.
