Discover Casa da Granja: Where Historic Charm Meets Modern Comfort

The main house, characterized by its horizontal layout and ornate decorative elements, features an upper noble floor adorned with rectangular windows topped by friezes. A prominent coat of arms, belonging to the Pinto Machado family who has owned the property for generations, proudly dominates the main entrance gate. Interestingly, access to the property is not through the front facade but rather via a side staircase, adding to its historical mystery.

Casa da Granja is a treasure trove of history and tradition! Also known as Casa de Santo António do Muro, it derives its name from a niche with the image of Saint Anthony carved into its granite walls. In ancient times, locals would light oil lamps in supplication for their sick animals. Adding to its allure are statues representing two Moorish figures and an Arab warrior, which lend it the local name "Quinta dos Mouros."

The street leading to the house, known as Rua da Granja, has been paved over, losing some of its historical essence. However, the Roman road is still marked, making it easy to locate on GPS. According to Joaquim Correia Duarte, Casa da Granja is situated in the parish of Anreade, deriving its name from Antreatus – a Roman lord who is said to have owned and colonized this land.

For centuries, the house belonged to the Pinto Machado family, hosting notable figures such as D. Francisca Pinto da Fonseca in the 17th century and the physician Dr. Alberto Augusto Cesar Pinto Machado in the late 19th century. The latter was a prominent figure in medicine, journalism, and politics, serving as president of the Association of Journalists and Men of Letters of Porto and Futebol Clube do Porto.

As such, Casa da Granja harmoniously combines its historical past with modern comforts, making it an ideal destination for leisure stays with family or groups of friends. With over 800 square meters, the property can accommodate up to 16 guests in 8 spacious rooms, each equipped with private bathrooms ensuring privacy and convenience. The exception is the "Queen's room," named in honour of Queen Dona Mafalda, retaining 17th-century furniture including an impressive Philippine mahogany canopy bed. The house's halls preserve their original layout, adorned with furniture primarily from the 17th and 18th centuries.
