There's no real \"bad time\" to visit the Douro, but there are, without question, different times for different experiences. This month-by-month guide helps you pick the right season depending on what you're after: the grape harvest, river cruises, autumn photography, or simply avoiding the August crowds.<\/p>

Winter (December to February)<\/strong><\/h2>

The coldest, wettest time of year, with averages between 4\u00b0C and 12\u00b0C in the valley floor (colder still in Vila Real and higher-altitude areas) and around 300mm of rain concentrated across these three months. \n\nIt's also the quietest season for tourism, ideal for those seeking quiet who don't mind shorter, colder days. Christmas and New Year are the exception: quintas across the region see strong demand for celebration dinners and festivities.<\/p>

Spring (March to May)<\/strong><\/h2>

Temperatures rise gradually (from averages around 11\u00b0C in March to 16\u00b0C in May) as rainfall decreases. This is the season of the\u00a0Almond Blossom Festival<\/strong>, between February and March, one of the first big markers of the Douro's peak season.\u00a0<\/p>

Easter Week, with Lamego's historic processions, also draws many visitors on dates that shift each year (check that year's calendar). Late May starts to edge into the year's real \"sweet spot\", good weather, green scenery, and still no summer crowds.<\/p>

Summer (June to August)<\/strong><\/h2>

The hottest, driest season, July is the driest month of the year (around 10mm of rain), and valley-floor temperatures easily top 30\u00b0C, with the Douro Superior and areas like Pinh\u00e3o reaching extreme highs (past 45\u00b0C in July and August).\u00a0<\/p>

August is also the busiest tourism month of the year, combining local festivals, summer holidays, and heat. If visiting during this window, plan outdoor activities for early morning or late afternoon, and take advantage of the season when the houses' private pools are open (May through October).<\/p>

Autumn (September to November)<\/strong><\/h2>

October and November bring the Douro's iconic \"autumn colors\", golden and red vineyard foliage, soft light, and frequent morning mist, one of the favorite periods for landscape photographers.\u00a0<\/p>

It's also when rainfall gradually picks up again. On November 11, St. Martin's Day brings the traditional Magusto, roasted chestnuts and new wine\/jeropiga tasting, a tradition several quintas in the region openly celebrate.<\/p>
