Discover Arouca: what to see, what to experience, and where to stay

A Day in Arouca: From the River to the Mountains, From Adventure to Tranquility

It’s not just the heights that take your breath away. It’s the combination of everything: a river rushing powerfully between towering cliffs, a mountain range that holds geological secrets found nowhere else in the world, villages that seem untouched by time, and a cuisine that, on its own, makes the trip worthwhile.

Less than an hour from Porto, Arouca is the perfect destination for those seeking nature and adventure without sacrificing the peace of mind that comes from returning to a home designed just for you.

1. The Awakening in Rio: The Paiva Walkways

There is a reason why the Paiva Walkways to be known beyond national borders. The 8 kilometer route along the left bank of the Paiva River offers a landscape that alternates between rocky cliffs, dense forest, and the constant sound of flowing water. Physically accessible, visually extraordinary.

Our tip: come early. During peak season, the Walkways reach their daily visitor limit, and the experience is much richer when the river is still shrouded in mist and the path is quiet. It’s the kind of morning you’ll remember for a long time.

3. A Journey Through Time: The Monastery and Trilobites

Arouca has much more to offer than just nature. In the town’s historic center, the Monastery of Santa Maria de Arouca it commands attention due to the scale and significance of its history. Designated a National Monument, it houses one of the richest collections of religious art on the Iberian Peninsula, and its connection to Queen Mafalda makes the guided tour particularly engaging.

In a few minutes, the Trilobite Museum it takes those who weren’t expecting to find it by surprise. Here are some of the world’s largest trilobite fossils, 465 million year old marine creatures that prove this land was once the bottom of the sea. An unexpected and genuinely fascinating stop.

4. The Infinite Viewpoint: Detrelo da Malhada

Serra da Freita has plenty of reasons to be worth a visit. The Detrelo da Malhada, at an altitude of over 1,000 meters, offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic views in Portugal. From here, you can see both the mountains and the sea at the same time, with a view spanning about a quarter of the mainland that leaves anyone speechless. It is no coincidence that it is a favorite spot for astrophotographers.
